About DEC

Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) was an American based manufacturer of computer hardware, software, and services. DEC was first established in 1957 in Maynard, Massachusetts, and their initial operations consisted of producing parts and systems for the computer market. A year after their establishment, DEC began producing various computer modules that were utilized for lab digital systems. During the 1960’s, DEC also released a series of PDP microcomputers, and these proved quite successful after a slow start. In 1970, DEC released the PDP-11 microcomputer which served as a great technological leap from its predecessors, and the model garnered a large amount of sales for the company.

During the subsequent years after the success of the PDP-11, DEC began to expand their company, opening up a manufacturing facility in Ireland. Due to their growing sales, the company also entered the Fortune 500 list, as well as established a presence in the high-end computer market. Due to their growing expertise in computers, DEC trailed behind IBM as the second largest computer company during the 1980’s. In the following decade, DEC released a 64-bit microprocessor, and designed one of the world’s first internet search engines. In 1998, DEC was acquired by Compaq, and four years later they became a part of Hewlett-Packard. With the split of Hewlett-Packard, DEC continues to be succeeded by both HP Inc. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
